Frown Lines Treatments

These lines are the vertical ‘angry’ lines that develop in between the eyebrows. Treatment of this area tends to result in a more youthful and approachable appearance.

Some patients have excessive muscle mass in this region, which makes the eyebrows protrude which can be clearly seen from the side view, producing an ‘angry face’ appearance, even at rest. Many patients generally present as others may have told them that they ‘appear unapproachable’ or have a ‘resting bugger face’. This is generally due to a prolonged period of increased muscle strength and size leading to these nasty frown lines. Delayed treatments usually leads to a worse prognosis which becomes much more difficult to treat and requires stronger intervention such a dermal fillers to the frown.

Anti- Wrinkle Treatment

How do they work?

A neurotoxin is injected into the targeted areas across the forehead which leads to weakening and shrinkage of the Frontalis muscle, which is the muscle responsible for horizontal wrinkle lines.

When should I expect to notice results?

Fillers are strategically placed in the mid portion of the face, where the insertion points are going to be based on the individual and the desired outcome. This is achieved by inserting the filler (a gel like substances which strengthens over the next few weeks) in the area of the mid face which helps enlarge, define and contour the cheeks.
HA fillers are dissolvable which means you can always reverse their effect if you ever change your mind.

How long do the effects of neurotoxins last?

Generally 3 to 6 months. Approximately just over 60% of patient will retain neurotoxin effects at the 4 months mark post treatment. Depending on genetics and lifestyle, some patients only retain effects for up to 8 weeks (those who are extremely physically active tends to metabolize the product faster and have shorter lasting results)

Dermal Fillers to the Frown

The most common causes involve volume loss and increased muscle strength. The most popular treatment in this scenario involves the use of anti-wrinkle (neurotoxin) injections. The neurotoxin leads to a temporary paralysis of parts of the muscle which leads to a significant reduction in wrinkle lines, especially those more prominent with facial expressions.

Dermal fillers are used to treat strong frown lines which are still present at rest and there’s no facial expression. Fillers are carefully placed in safe areas and moulded to treat these stubborn wrinkles  in order to produce a natural appearance.

For Men, Fillers are also used to enhance the facial appearance as a more prominent forehead and brows produce a more masculine appearance.

Pain Relief

Most practitioners and patients prefer to have some form of pain relief. There are multiple options available for your convenience;

  • Initially, a topical numbing agent such as emla cream or lmx, is applied to the area of treatment. Common additional forms of pain relief:
  • Local anaesthesia using a nerve block is a fantastic method to achieve almost no pain at all, however this does vary based on individual. This is quite similar and sometimes used interchangeably with the term dental block. Most dermal fillers also contain local anaesthesia and hence any pain experienced during treatment generally tends to improve throughout
  • Laughing gas (also known as happy gas or Nitros oxide) is also available.
  • Applying ice to the area prior to treatment can also help reduce the pain, and applying ice after the procedure also helps reduce the swelling.

After the pain relief is applied, cleaning agents to minimise infection risk, such as alcohol swabs or Chlorhexidine is applied to the area. Dermal fillers are applied by injecting the product and inserting accordingly at different layers beneath the skin

Right After The Procedure

After treatment Some bruising, redness and swelling maybe present and self resolve over the next few days. Generally the swelling tends to provide a slightly enhanced effect due to the increased volume associated with this, which tends to disappear eventuate into a more natural appearance. Some patients tend to enjoy the swelling effect, however others may prefer the more natural effect.

Anti-Wrinkle After Care

No makeup or face creams for 4 hours

Avoid alcohol for the next 24hrs (1 to 2 standard drinks is generally acceptable)

No gym or exercise on that day

Make sure you’re sitting up for the next 4 hours

Avoid sauna, facial massages and leaning forward

Treatment Risks

Mild Swelling at injection site

Infection- very rare

Asymmetry, one sides may be more responsive to treatment than the other

Headaches may occur, more likely to occur on first time treatment

Temporary drooping of the eyebrows or eyelids in less than 1% of cases; this may occur with anti-wrinkle treatment near these structures and may last for a few weeks and then spontaneously self resolves.

Spock brow; occurs when the outer part of the brows becomes too elevated and produces a small crease above the lateral brow when lifting them. This may occur when your injector is attempting to maximise the brow lift, however, every individual is different and some patients may strongly to this resulting in a strong lift of the outer brows. This is simply corrected with a free follow up treatment using small amount of neurotoxin at no extra charge.
