Considering a Nose Procedure: A Decision Checklist

A decision about changing the appearance of your nose should begin with an assessment, not a choice made from a procedure name or photograph. Nose shape varies naturally, and choosing no cosmetic procedure is a valid option.

Separate appearance from function

Explain whether your concern relates to appearance, breathing, a previous injury or a previous procedure. A cosmetic consultation should not be assumed to address a breathing problem. Ask whether medical or specialist assessment is needed before considering an elective change.

Compare what each option can and cannot do

Different approaches are not interchangeable. Ask the practitioner to explain the limits of any proposed option for your anatomy. Avoid assuming that a non-surgical approach can achieve the same changes as surgery, or that a temporary effect makes a procedure easy to reverse.

Use a decision checklist

  • What is the reason for recommending this approach for me?
  • What would happen if I chose no procedure?
  • What outcome is realistic, and what uncertainty remains?
  • What are the common and serious risks for the nose specifically?
  • Who would perform the procedure, and what relevant training do they have?
  • What recovery restrictions, follow-up and costs should I plan for?
  • How would a complication be recognised and managed?

Review the information before consenting

Ask for written information you can take away. Include any previous nose procedures in your history, even if they were years ago or performed at another clinic. A recommendation should account for that history rather than relying only on your current appearance.

Descriptions such as โ€œquickโ€ or โ€œnon-surgicalโ€ do not establish that an option is low risk. Do not book around a promised recovery date or assume that a satisfactory result is guaranteed.
