Microneedling: Uses, Risks and Recovery Questions

Microneedling uses fine needles to puncture the skin. It is a procedure with potential benefits and risks, rather than an essential part of a skin-care routine. The device, treatment area and individual skin concern affect what may be appropriate.

What can microneedling address?

Microneedling is used for concerns such as the appearance of some acne scars and fine lines. Improvement is not guaranteed, and it does not remove every type of scar or skin concern. Ask what evidence supports the proposed device and its use for your specific concern.

What risks should be discussed?

Possible effects include redness, discomfort, bleeding, bruising, dryness and peeling. Complications can include infection, pigment changes and scarring. Some adverse effects can persist. A consultation cannot eliminate these risks.

Read the American Academy of Dermatology’s microneedling information for a clinical overview. Device authorisation and professional requirements differ between countries.

What should happen before treatment?

Ask which device would be used, who would perform the procedure and what relevant training they have. Explain your medical history, medicines, current skin problems and previous reactions. The assessment may identify reasons to postpone treatment or consider another approach.

What about recovery and repeat sessions?

Request written instructions for cleansing, makeup, sun exposure, exercise and restarting skin-care products. The timing should reflect your procedure and recovery, rather than a universal timetable. Agree on how the response will be assessed before committing to further sessions.
