Acne care: active breakouts and scarring

Active acne and acne scars need different assessments. Start with a diagnosis and a plan for current breakouts before choosing a cosmetic procedure for marks or changes in skin texture.

When to seek medical advice

Speak with your GP if acne is bothering you, is severe, or has not improved with advice from your pharmacist. Acne can cause scarring. Your GP can assess your skin and discuss whether referral to a dermatologist is needed.

Assess current breakouts first

Acne care depends on its severity, your general health and previous treatment. Bring a list of skincare products and medicines you use, how long you have used them, and any irritation or other problems. Mention pregnancy or plans for pregnancy because some treatments are unsuitable.

Discuss scars separately

Scar assessment considers the type and location of scars, skin tone, previous treatment and your goals. Scar procedures generally begin after active acne is controlled. A procedure intended for a scar is not necessarily a treatment for ongoing breakouts.

Questions for your appointment

  • Is this active acne, a residual mark or a scar?
  • What is the first priority in my care plan?
  • When should we review progress or change the plan?
  • What side effects, recovery and costs should I expect?
  • Do I need a dermatologistโ€™s assessment?

A cosmetic service list cannot establish which option is appropriate for you. Ask for individual advice before booking a procedure or changing prescribed treatment.
