Aftercare depends on the procedure, the area treated and your medical history. Advice for one cosmetic procedure may be unsuitable for another. Follow the written instructions from your treating practitioner rather than a general online timetable.
Before you leave the clinic
Make sure you have a record of what was done, the products used, expected symptoms and the planned follow-up. Ask for clear instructions about medicines, skin care and activity restrictions. Keep the practitioner’s contact details and the alternative contact for when they are unavailable.
Ahpra’s non-surgical cosmetic procedure guidelines describe the written information and arrangements patients should receive after a procedure.
Get specific answers about your routine
- When can I wash the area and use my usual skin-care products or makeup?
- What restrictions apply to exercise, swimming, heat and sun exposure?
- Should I avoid pressure or massage on this particular area?
- When should I return for review, and who should I contact sooner?
There is no single waiting period for makeup, exercise or another skin treatment that applies to every procedure. If your instructions are unclear or conflict with something you have read, ask your treating practitioner to clarify before changing your routine.
Know when to seek help
Ask which symptoms are expected and which need urgent assessment. Follow the escalation instructions you were given for unusual pain or symptoms. Do not rely on a website contact form or social-media message for urgent care. For a life-threatening emergency, call 000.
Keep a useful recovery record
Note when symptoms started and whether they are changing. Tell the practitioner about any products or medicines you have used since the procedure. This information can help them assess your concern; it does not replace an examination when one is needed.
