Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from a person’s blood by separating and concentrating components. Preparation methods and intended uses differ. The name alone does not establish what a particular preparation contains or what results it can achieve.
PRP and PRF are not interchangeable labels
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is another blood-derived preparation. Ask what would actually be prepared, how it would be used and what evidence supports that specific approach. Describing a preparation as newer, natural or more advanced does not prove that it is safer or more effective.
Ask about evidence for the specific concern
Evidence for one preparation, application or condition cannot automatically be applied to another. A claim about skin appearance is different from a claim about hair loss. If hair loss is your concern, ask for an assessment of its cause before deciding on a procedure.
- What outcome is being proposed, and how will it be measured?
- What evidence relates to this preparation and method?
- What uncertainty remains?
- What alternatives are available, including no procedure?
Discuss risks and suitability
Using your own blood does not make a procedure risk-free. Blood collection and injections can involve pain, bruising, bleeding and infection. Risks also depend on the treatment site, handling and any accompanying procedure. Ask for the relevant risks to be explained rather than relying on a general promise of mild effects.
Tell the practitioner about medicines, bleeding or platelet disorders, current illness and previous reactions. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless your treating clinician advises you to do so.
Clarify the whole plan
Ask who will collect, prepare and administer the material, what qualifications they hold, and how complications would be managed. Request written information about recovery, follow-up and costs before deciding. A fixed results date or repeat-session schedule should not be assumed from a general article.
The TGA explains that regulation of these preparations depends on how they are manufactured and supplied. This overview does not confirm the regulatory status or suitability of a particular clinic preparation.
